Do you feel your golf mobility may be hurting your score? Are you hitting the range regularly and getting a round in every week or so yet your golf score doesn’t seem to change? In this post we will address the two most important parts of your golf game, how to identify your golf mobility restrictions and what you can do about it.
Two things that matter most in a golf swing:
- Ball Flight – club face orientation, contact, and swing path at impact
- Ball Speed – the faster you swing the club, the the farther the ball goes
If you are stiff and restricted it is going to impact how you move through the golf ball (impact position) and how fast you can swing. Mobility then becomes an important facilitator of good technique and improving ball speed.
How do you know if your golf mobility is restricted?
- Slow motion swing
The easiest and quickest way is to go through your swing in slow motion and identify areas that feel tight or painful. If the swing you are trying to achieve doesn’t feel smooth and easy it will be very difficult to reproduce on the golf course.
- Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) Golf Movement Screen
The TPI helps identify areas where you move well and areas you need to work on to improve your game. It was designed with data from tour professionals by the Titleist Performance Institute (More on this below 👇).
- You struggle with your longer clubs
Long irons, hybrids, and woods. The longer the club the more mobility you will need to execute a good shot. Often golfers find inconsistency with the longer clubs in their bag if they are lacking end range mobility in their golf swing.
The TPI Screen – What do you get?
Our physiotherapist Mike is TPI certified and can complete this as part of the golf performance physiotherapy assessment. He treats many golfers and using this screen to guide golf performance has been game changing for his patients.
At the end of your initial appointment you will make a plan together on how to address any deficits found and prioritize them in order to make the fastest change in your game.
What’s included in the TPI screen?
- A fitness handicap that helps your golf physio create a personalized roadmap of what to improve first. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t like a score?
- Likelihood of swing characteristics your mobility may be causing – e.g. early extension as you come through impact.
This score allows you to compare you actual handicap to your golf fitness handicap. If your actual golf handicap is much lower then this points to a whole lot of potential left on the table. Improving your mobility may be a huge boost to your overall game.
At the end of the day, the only thing that matters in the golf performance world is your score at the end of the round.
Let’s work together and start chipping away at it.
